Plywood
planks are stitched together and the seams
sealed with fibreglass tape set in epoxy.
The exterior is part sheathed in lightweight
fibreglass cloth for scratch resistance
and the remainder of the hull sealed in
epoxy. Standard trim is in hardwood with
webbing seats and the whole finished in
yacht varnish. Using up to five planks per
side a well rounded shape can be achieved
with performance similar to a cedarstrip
canoe.
Kits come with full building instructions
and notes on making your own sailing rig
and paddle carving. They include all canoe
parts excluding glue (about 1 - 4 kg of
epoxy or polyester resin - readily available
from fibreglass shops and marine chandlrys)
and paint/varnish. Materials provided include:-
Pre-cut marine plywood planks, Gunwales
(Ash outwales, Larch/Fir inwales), Part
built ash seats and seat webbing, Materials
for breasthooks, carrying yoke and thwarts,
Stainless steel and brass fastenings, Fibreglass
tape for seams, Fibreglass cloth for sheathing,
Resin fillers.
The Wren and
Baby Wren have a flat bottom plank and two
planks per side. They are more straightforward
to build than the Prospector, Peterborough
or Carrick with five planks per side requiring
a set of moulds to build in (provided with
the kit). Construction should take around
two weekends and a few evenings depending
on the design and the finish required.

Peterborough.
Length 15' 7",
Beam 32", Weight 45 lbs.
Selway Fisher version.
|
| |
 |
| |
|
The
Peterborough is a fast touring boat of moderate
volume. She has a low sheerline for minimum
windage, limited rocker for good tracking
and moderate tumblehome ease of paddling
and good solo manoeuvrability. She would
make an excellent solo tourer for extended
trips or a good doubles dayboat.

Length 15'

With
greater beam and depth the Prospector is
a good doubles touring boat. Her tumblehome
and well rockered hull make her highly manoeuvrable
and good for river paddling.

The
Wren has a similar volume to the Prospector,
her longer waterline length make for better
tracking and with just two planks per side
she is the easiest canoe to build.
|

Carrick.
Length 15'
7", Beam 37", Weight 45 lbs.
Selway Fisher design |
| |
 |
| |
|
Designed
for sailing the Carrick has a low sheerline,
fine entry and asymetric hull. She paddles
quite well and has sufficient capacity for
an occasional double, however she is best
when sailed solo and is fast and very manoeuvrable.
Shown with push/pull rudder, gybing leeboard
and aerofoil mast.

Mayfly.
Length 12'

Selway Fisher design. |

Could
be fitted out for rowing and is suitable
for a small outboard, the Mayfly has easily
sufficient capacity for 4 adults while being
light enough to be car toppable.

| Cedarstrip
Canoes |
|
The
canoe hull is built up from some 60 to 80
lengths of bead and cove cedar
strip (6mm by 20mm) glued edge to edge.
It is then sheathed throughout in fibreglass
cloth set in epoxy. The resulting blend
of different shades of cedar combines good
looks with great structural rigidity and
an almost maintenance free finish.
Kits come with full building instructions
and notes on making your own sailing rig
and paddle carving. They include all canoe
parts excluding glue (about 3 - 5 kg of
epoxy or polyester resin) and paint/varnish.
You will need to make up a building frame
on which the moulds are mounted (can be
made out of scrap timber or a couple of
good straight planks) and cut moulds out
of plywood from the templates provided.
There is a wide range of designs available;
traditional paddling canoes, specialist
sailing, touring, whitewater, solo and general
purpose designs. Some that we have built
are shown below.

Perhaps
the most elegant canoe ever designed. She
is an excellent touring boat with a hull

have also built a 17' version for those
with a shorter garage!
